As First-Year students at UPIKE we all had questions when we started this semester. What would cause us stress in college and what could we do about it? You may find yourself asking these same exact questions. Thankfully for you and me both, we have been able to survey some of the first-year students here at UPIKE. You can see the results of the survey in graph formatting on the article listed here as, "Survey Results".
At UPIKE most students who filled out this survey were undecided, nursing, criminal justice and education majors. We had the students answer questions using a scale from one to five. On meaning least likely to and five meaning highly likely to either cause stress or be a way they choose to reduce stress. In this article let us focus on what causes stress in first-year UPIKE students.
In order from most to least likely to cause stress at UPIKE is Homework, Classwork, Money/Finances, Adulting/Being an adult alone for the first time, Commuting/Distance away from home, Rooming and finally Sports.
Homework and Classwork.
At UPIKE most classwork turns into homework, or is expected of you to do the classwork in your own time as homework. From the survey we had a spot where the students could explain more of their feelings. Some survey participants told me that they were stressed because they were expected to keep a certain GPA to be kept inside of their major program/graduate on time. This causes them stress with trying to find time to study and do their homework/classwork. Students at UPIKE said that often they have a hard time with their time management skills when it comes to doing their classwork/homework and have it be in on time.
Money.
Most of the participants of this survey said that they have some issues with their money and finances. From paying the expenses and tuition of college to just wanting some money to spend on their free time most students at UPIKE tend to struggle. From the survey most students said that they work a student job here on the campus of UPIKE or they are working a job that is close to the college.
Adulting and Commuting/Distance From Home.
Most participants said that these two seem to go hand in hand. You can tell from the survey data that these two had very similar results. Most students at UPIKE come from away from their home. The participants said that they were having to be an adult and do adult things for the first time in their lives. They are far away from home and it can be a struggle to having to change from having that close support from a parent or guardian to now you are all alone at college, possibly hours away from your home.
Rooming.
Students at UPIKE tend to have a pretty easy time when it comes to rooming and any and all issues that might arrive with rooming here at UPIKE. Most students told me that they thought the rooming survey that you fill out face them a great roommate that they now consider themselves to be friends with. The maintenance and support is always available for you too if any issues need fixed in your room like problems with the air conditioner or the door lock dies. You always have someone who can come and help you fix your problem.
Sports.
Sports landed very low on the list of things that cause stress here at UPIKE. Most students here are athletes and they rely on their sports a lot. The participants that we surveyed said that they sport is a escape for them. They are able to zone out and find a peaceful spot while they participate in their sporting event. The main stress when it comes to sports is having a hard time to fix your schedule around the sporting events and practices.
Overall most students at UPIKE do not have a lot of massive stresses. The main ones are homework and classwork. If this does become a big stress for you, your professors are always available to help you out. The professors at UPIKE are always there to help make you a successful student in their class. They are there to be a mentor and friend to you and help you out in any way that they can.
